Review – Hot Toys Christopher Reeve as Superman

One of the most anticipated figures in recent memory is the one I’m about to review, Hot Toys’ rendition of Christopher Reeve as Superman. Many of you will remember that Hot Toys hinted at this figure some time back, but it seemed like an eternity before they finally gave us some concrete information in May of 2011 that the figure would be on its way. As expected, this figure is well worth the wait. There are technically two versions – the regular and special editions. The only difference, however, is the kryptonite necklace included with the special edition. I’ll be reviewing that figure today.

Review – Hot Toys Batman/Bruce Wayne Batsuit (Batman Begins)

Six years after the movie’s release, Hot Toys continues to release – with great success, I might add – figures from 2005′s Batman Begins. The latest edition, dubbed Batsuit Begins, was originally offered exclusively at 2011 summer conventions, but was later made available to the general public via Sideshow Collectibles. This new 12″ figure captures Christian Bale as Batman, but in a new way not seen in previous Hot Toys Batman releases. While Batman in his regular suit can be displayed, the real draw (for me anyway) is the inclusion of Bruce Wayne’s prototype Batsuit. Not to mention a killer portrait of the actor, Bale. Read on for the full review.

Review – Green Lantern Movie Toys

Review - Green Lantern Movie Toys

In just over a month, the much-anticipated Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds will hit theaters across the nation. Of course it wouldn’t be the same if a toy company didn’t throw the figures out on the shelves more than a month before the movie is released, so right on cue Mattel has begun the shipping of the Green Lantern movie toy lines. These haven’t hit a lot of places yet, but I was able to score a good number of figures at a local Walmart store. Compared to many other 3 3/4″ action figure lines, these are relatively reasonably priced. The basic figure line rang up at $6.97 a pop, the Guardians of the Universe 2-packs at $12.97 each, and the Final Showdown box set at $19.97 for a large creature and an “action” figure (you’ll see what I mean later). Price aside, you’re getting a lot less with these figures than you are from your Marvel Universe, Star Wars or G.I.Joe. They’re pretty much an extension of the Infinite Heroes line, featuring minimal articulation and decent but unspectacular detail. Not to say there aren’t a few good figures in the bunch, but overall I see this line being easy clearance fodder a few months down the road. All that said, I have not see the 6″ Movie Masters line, so I’ll reserve judgment on that series until I do.

A few general statements about these before I carry on. Most figures come with a really cool construct that attaches to their left hand. While I haven’t tried them out myself, I understand they work well with the DC/Green Lantern Classics as well. As neat as they look and as well as they snap on to the figures’ hands, you can forget about standing your figure up without them resting on the construct. They’re far too heavy to be posed in any position other than resting on the surface, which doesn’t help the figures’ limited posability one bit. Each single carded figure comes with a pack-in gimmick, a child-sized role-play Green Lantern Power Ring. For adult collectors, these are easy drops in the “extras” bin, but for kids I imagine it adds a little value to the purchase. So, without further ado, read on for the details on these figures.

Review – Tonner DC Stars 13″ Wonder Woman

Tonner 13-inch Wonder Woman Review

Visitors to this site will probably notice that most of my reviews are on statues and action figures, but today I’m going to take a turn and cover something I have yet to review – one of Tonner’s Character Figures. In late 2010, the folks at Tonner did a little downsizing by introducing a new 13″ body style to the DC Stars line. To date, Artemis, Supergirl and Wonder Woman have seen release, and Black Canary and Catwoman are set to hit stores later this year. Today I’m going to be reviewing the Amazon herself, Wonder Woman. Review – DC Universe Classics Wave 16 (Bane C&C)

DC Universe Classics Wave 16

The 16th wave of Mattel’s DC Universe Classics have been on the shelves for a little while now, and despite this fact I have only seen Azrael Batman on the shelves ONCE during that time frame. Regardless of that minor inconvenience, it’s nice to see these figures hitting a little more regularly. With several Batman-related characters and a few household names, wave 16 is quite likely going to be one of the few remaining waves that are popular throughout, with Mattel focusing more on Blackest Night and other less popular characters in future waves. Wave 16 features six new figures – Azrael Batman, Creeper, Jonah Hex, Mercury, The Riddler and Robin. There are actually two Robins on the market, one with the modern head and another with a classics head sculpt. Buy the lot, and you’re equipped with all of the pieces needed to build the large Bane Collect & Connect figure. Read on for a full review of this entire wave.

Review – Cover Girls of the DC Universe Supergirl

Cover Girls of the DC Universe Supergirl

March marked the release of the ninth statue in the Cover Girls of the DC Universe statue line by DC Direct, the Girl of Steel, Supergirl. The Cover Girls series, which is based on the art of Adam Hughes, has proven to be an incredibly successful line of statues and DC Direct has delivered another winner with Kara Zor-El. As much as I like this statue, I’m not convinced that it should fall within the realm of Hughes’ Cover Girls. Read on for a full review.

Review – Kotobukiya Bishoujo Catwoman

Kotobukiya Bishoujo Catwoman

The second release in Kotobukiya’s DC Comics Bishoujo line, Catwoman, has hit the states! Offering Selina in her sleek, black, leather outfit, Koto has really taken sexy to a new level with their Bishoujo line. There are some things to look out for, but overall it’s a must have for Gothamites and Catwoman fans. Read on for the full review and a bunch of images.

Review – DC Universe Green Lantern Classics Wave 2

Review - DC Universe Green Lantern Classics Wave 2

It’s pretty amazing to think that, with the inclusion of the Public Enemies wave and the two Green Lantern waves, we’re approaching 20 series in the DC Classics line after just three short years of being in production. While the line seems to be faltering slightly due to odd character choices, spotty distribution of new waves and increasing costs (I’ve heard some places hitting $20.99 per figure!), Mattel continues to pop out some pretty good figures. Wave 2 of the Green Lantern Classics includes Sodam Yat, Skallox/Nite-Lik, Naut Kei Loi/Medphyll, Star Sapphire Carol Ferris, G’Hu (from the GL movie) and the first set of mini-characters, B’Dg, Dex-Starr and Despotellis. Each figure contains a piece to build the large Stel Collect & Connect figure, which is one of the coolest C&Cs to date. Read on for reviews of each figures.

Review – Heroes of the DC Universe Blackest Night Hal Jordan Minibust

Heroes of the DC Universe Blackest Night Hal Jordan Minibust

DC Direct’s plan for the Blackest Night minibust line was to release one per month throughout 2011. While they fell behind and didn’t release the first (Black Hand) until March 2nd, Hal Jordan followed suit on March 9th and #3, Star Sapphire, is due in two short days. Hal might not live up to Black Hand’s first impression, but he’s no slouch, either. Read on for a full review.
